of Korea, Vol.17 No.3, March 2001 ABSTRACT The objective of this study is to clarify the characteristics of site layout of traditional courtyard houses in Chungcheong Province, South Korea. Eleven cases were analyzed in this study, mainly in terms of territorial organization and circulation. The consequences of the study are summarized as follows; The traditional courtyard houses in Chungcheong Province, unlike those in Gyeongsang Province, generally have in-between territories, which increase the spatial depth of the inner (an-chae) territory. The distinguishing characteristics of site layout of such houses is best described in terms of territorial organization and circulation. On the other hand, the building plan type has not proven to be a significant factor characterizing the site layout. Thus, this study shows that territorial organization and circulation are crucial factors in determining the architectural implications of housing type. |
