A large Siheyuan,  Qiao Jia Bao in Qi Xian County, Shanxi Province is the location for the famous Chinese film "Raise the Red Lantern" directed by Zhang Yimou and produced by Hou Hsiao-hsien, 1991.

The story is based on the novel 'Wives and
Concubines' by Su Tong, which describes China in 1920s with the complex and tragic lives of one master and four wives.

The well organized Siheyuan spaces which dominate the film, are deemed to suggest the social institution and family custom which put women under restraint and foster their jealousy. Though the Siheyuan spaces consisting of many buildings around juxtaposed courtyards are compositionally stable,  and calm and static, they have been activated into breathtaking scenes by the dramatic change of the camera's shot level.

The Chinese house type, Siheyuan, is deemed to be the embodiment of the Confucian institution which has dominated the traditional Chinese society.
